Thiamin

Also known as vitamin B1, thiamin is a water soluble vitamin and a member of the B complex. Thiamin is essential for the production of energy from carbohydrates and fats. Moderate deficiency can show symptoms such as tiredness, apathy, nausea, slow wound healing and loss of appetite. As the deficiency becomes more severe, symptoms similar to senility, with disorientation, hallucinations, and depression may occur. Beriberi, which is a serious disease of the nervous system, is caused by extreme thiamin deficiency, and is not uncommon in developing countries. Deficiencies can be caused by high alcohol intake, crash dieting, liver disease, the use of certain drugs and antacids, and cigarette smoking.
