I'm not sure if all of you are aware that I was born and grew up in the Chicago area. You might say not all that much sun and more cloudy days than not, in Chicago. But, when we were kids, on the days we did have sun, we worshiped it. Not only did we bask in it but also we covered our bodies with a mixture of baby oil and iodine. It absorbed the rays, and you should have seen the beautiful tans. I’m sure all of you who aren’t quite my age yet are wondering why we didn’t use sunscreen. Well the only suntan lotion at the time was Coppertone and No one even knew about sunscreens or the damage we were doing to our skin.
As I grew older, I learned about the summer sun and how important it is to keep yourself protected from it, but, unfortunately, I had already done damage to my skin, that I wasn’t aware. Then about 15 years ago I felt a tiny spot on the corner of my mouth. It felt as if I had licked an envelope and cut the corner with the paper…. It wouldn’t go away, no matter what I did, and it became more and more painful.
Needless to say, I finally went to a Doctor and was terrified when I found out it was cancer. With the treatment I received, the sore became larger and larger the pain became almost unbearable. I was terrified and thought I would die or be scarred and hideous looking for the rest of my life. I remember hiding in the house and covering my face, so no one could see me. I felt it looked hideous. But you know what? I was lucky! Only, now, with a strong magnification lens, can you see the difference in the texture of my skin. There are no visible scars.
Yes, I do go to the Doctor on a regular basis and have checkups and sometimes, as I will be doing next month, treatments. I don’t mind the discomfort or the fact that I am sometime bright red or bruised. It’s okay, because, I’m here and I can share my story with all of you.
So the sun is shinning, enjoy yourselves but remember to keep covered, and use your sunscreen. And may I also suggest using our product for this month Vitamin D, along with the rest of your Vitamins. Instead of closing this letter with a quote or a poem as I usually do, I would like to attach a link to a YouTube video that means a lot to me. I hope you enjoy it and understand the meaning.
