B-Complex Vitamins

The B-complex vitamins are all water soluble and work better together than they do individually. They are interdependent to the point that an oversupply of one can cause a deficiency in another and insufficiency of one can cause the body to use another as a substitute.

B-complex vitamins provide the body with energy by converting carbohydrates into glucose. They are also essential in fat and protein metabolism and are necessary for the proper function of the nervous system. They act to maintain muscle tone in the gastrointestinal tract and are essential for the health of hair, skin, the eyes, mouth, and liver.

These are found naturally in brewers yeast, liver, and whole grain cereals.  Need for the B-complex vitamins can increase during times of stress, infection and when alcohol, cigarettes and carbohydrate consumption is high. Children and pregnant women are known to be at risk if their B-complex vitamin intake falls below the requirements for their particular life situations. Weight-loss dieters, older adults and persons taking antibiotics may need additional amounts of the B-complex vitamins.

The official members of the B-Complex family are B1 (Thiamine), B2 (Riboflavin), B3 (Niacin), B5 (Pantothenic Acid), B6 (Pyridoxine family), B7 (Biotin), B9 (Folacin), B12 (Cobalamin).  Other nutrients, such as Choline, are often included in the list due to the strong similarities with the B-Complex group, but these are the only "B name" vitamins that are deemed essential.  Vitamins B 4, 8, 10, & 11 were once believed to be essential, but each was found to be either not useful, or made by your body in sufficient enough amounts that there was no need to get it from your diet.  Still more products are sold as B 13, 14, 15, etc. but these are always marketing ploys and nothing that warrants consideration as a B-Complex vitamin.  Some of the additional B's you might see advertised, such as "B-15" (pangamic acid) and "B-17" (amygdalin), are extremely hazardous to your health, and are only sold by either morally bankrupt or dangerously ill-informed individuals.
