Biotin is often classified as a B-complex vitamin since it was discovered alongside other B vitamins.  It is also called vitamin B7, but this name is uncommon.  Usually it's just called biotin.

Early research into biotin found large concentrations it in nails, skin, and hair.  At the time, the results of biotin supplementation to promote nail health seemed promising, but there has not been sufficient recent scientific research into these potential benefits.  Biotin is also an enzymatic cofactor that may interact with glucose metabolism. Ever since discovering its possible role in glucose metabolism, that has been the primary focus of biotin research, with no substantial effort to back up its role in beauty care with scientific evidence.  As an enzymatic cofactor, studies are still ongoing to determine the full extent of its job, but in rodents with a elevated blood levels of biotin, more insulin is released in response to a glucose, which lowers glucose levels over time.  While the effect on rodent test subjects is interesting, so far there is not much evidence regarding humans and insulin resistance.  A lot more research needs to be done on what biotin's effect is, and whether supplementing with it is worthwhile.
