Vitamin C

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble essential vitamin.  Vitamin C supplements are commonly taken to reduce the symptoms of the common cold, but there is a lot of false or misleading information out there about it.  If you heard that it was a cure or that it treated the symptoms, I'm afraid that you heard wrong.  Research into vitamin C has shown that widespread use is unable to reduce the frequency of the common cold in a healthy population.  However, it does have some benefits as an aid to your immune system.  For instance, an athlete regularly supplementing vitamin C may improve their immune system enough to cut their own risk of getting a cold in half.  Supplementation of vitamin C may also boost the immune response to the cold, reducing the duration by 8-14% as long as it is taken regularly as a daily preventative measure, or at the very beginning of a cold when the symptoms first appear.  Taking vitamin C during a cold has never been shown to be effective.

So that's the short and skinny of vitamin C and the common cold.  Vitamin C's benefit here is simply in its support of your own immune system.  In fact, your immune system happens to be the most effective tool to fighting most illnesses, so it's important to sharpen and maintain that tool!

Now that we're past what you thought it was for, let's talk about some amazing features of vitamin C.  Vitamin C has the ability to be both an antioxidant and pro-oxidant, depending on what the body needs. This mechanism allows it to serve a variety of functions in the body from neutralizing free radicals to aiding enzyme reactions that lead to the synthesis of neurotransmitters, collagen, and some amino acids.  Vitamin C’s structure also allows it to act on many systems, such as the nervous system and the pancreas. As an antioxidant, vitamin C's key role is as a protector, guarding your cells against damage.

VitaMist puts these benefits to use in another way as well by including vitamin C in most of our sprays as a natural preservative.  This protects your supplements from decay, raises their pH to prevent bacterial contamination, and still gives you the wonderful effects of a vitamin C supplement.
